Week 3-4

1.6 Addition and subtraction of rational numbers

    1.6 a)  The book gives       90      as an example.
                                             168
             Step 1 find all of the prime factors for 90 and for 168
             90   = 3,3,2,5
             168 = 2,2,2,3,7

             step 2 cross off the prime numbers that are the same one of each. for example 2 = 1 so they
             can be crossed off.   So the equivalent fraction is (3)(5)       =   15                     2
                                                                                           (2)(2)(7)        28

             When I say equivalent fractions I mean 90 divided by 168 equals 15 divided by 28. if you
             put  it in a calculator you get exactly the same number for the two division problems.

      Order of operations practice interactive: order_of_operations/games/
       Brain POP- Video about order of operations:
        PEMDAS order of operations.

1.5 Factoring numbers and prime factorization:
      Factors are numbers that divide with a remainder of 0
      Example: if you take the number 15, It's factors are 1, 3, 5, 15 because
                        3 X 5 = 15
               and  1 X 15 = 15

   as you can see in the book another example is the factors of 40 are
   1, 2 4, 5, 8, 10, 20 and 40

   Prime numbers are numbers that can only be divided by 1 and it's own number.

   So the prime numbers in the factors of 40 are:

   1, 2, and 5.
